Early Immigrant's Trunk Item #: AF0445 Description: Large chest with dome-shaped lift top. Left front and right rear panels with screened crescent moon cut-outs for ventilation. 3 Iron straps wrap the trunk to serve as structure, hinges and latches. Forged lift handles on sides. Hammered angled metal to protect corners attached with rose head nails. 2 large iron locks on front panel. Materials: Wood. Iron hinges, straps and locks. Dimensions: Height: 34-1/2". Width: 55". Depth: 23". Locality and Period: Probably European. c. 1815. Comments: Used by immigrant's coming to the United States in the late 18th and early 19th centuries this massive trunk would hold the entire possesions of the traveling family. Width: 24-1/2" closed, 66" open. Depth: 48". Locality and Period: Pennsylvania, Ohio, the Midwest. c. 1850. Comments: Country Sheraton furnishings were simple interpretations of the fashionable late Federal style that was popular during the early 1800's. The turnings and tapering of the legs were not as sophisticated or delicate as urban examples but had not adopted the heavy proportions of the emerging Empire style.
