Cupboard doors conceal interior with 14 pigeonholes, 6 vertical slots flanking 2 stacked small drawers over galleried central compartment. Lower section having hinged and slightly slanted lift-top writing surface that raises to reveal large well. Front, back and side panels mortised and pegged to square stiles that form upper legs. Lift-top Countinghouse Desk Item #: AF0809 Description: Large desk with boxlike sloped lift top writing flap hinged at back to full length board. Interior without dividers or pigeonholes. Center desk flanked by 2 flat work surfaces over panel door cupboards. Cupboards having one shelf each. Skirt valanced in balanced cyma curves forming bracket feet. Materials: Walnut. Dimensions: Height: 35". Width: 60". Depth: 26". Locality and Period: Probably Missouri. c. 1850. Comments: Countinghouse or store desks were once common in every shop and office. Although they resemble schoolmaster's desks, countinghouse desks are distinguished by being substantially larger. Schoolmaster's Lift-top Desk Item #: AF0814 Description: Tall desk with sloping lift-top attached by hinges to a horizontal board fastened at sides. Lift top with molding at lower edge to hold papers and books and a low gallery at top rear. Sides mortised and pegged to stiles that are extensions of turned and tapered legs ending in vase feet. Pegged and nailed construction. Materials: Walnut with turned cherry legs. Pine secondary. Dimensions: Height: 36". Width: 29". Depth: 25". Locality and Period: East west to Missouri and throughout the South. c.1825-35. Comments: This desk takes its name from its widespread use in rural schoolhouses. Three drawers over slanted front that falls forward on metal hinges to reveal well. Interior has two small drawers and 6 pigeonholes. Two small stacked drawers flanked by bookshelves below fall front and above full-length drawer. Legs extensions of square stiles. Materials: Oak. Pine secondary. Hinges: brass.
