Center having two drawers, the top with silverware dividers and felt. Serpentine cupboard doors flank drawers, the right side having one interior shelf, the left without shelf for tall bottle storage. Fluted stiles continue to 6 tapered and turned legs. Front 4 legs also carved and reeded terminating in ring and vase feet. Scrolled skirt. Materials: Figured walnut veneers and walnut solids. Various secondary woods. Brass hardware. Jelly Cupboard from Hermann, MO. Item #: AF0798 Description: 1-piece cupboard with rounded edge, overhanging top. 2 drawers, one with working lock, one with faux lock, over 2 paneled, locking doors. Drawer fronts molded and having glass pulls. Valanced side skirts extensions of side boards ending with bracket feet. Interior of cupboard having 2 shelves. Paneled, dovetailed and nailed construction. Materials: Butternut (white walnut). Pine and white walnut secondary. Glass drawer pulls (replaced). Dimensions: Height: 49-1/2". Width: 53-1/4". Depth: 18-1/2". Locality and Period: Missouri. c.1850. Comments: Referred to as jelly or jam cupboards, these nice country pieces were undoubtedly used to store foodstuffs. The locking drawer was used to store tea and sugar, the most valuable of provisions. The height, depth of and sturdy construction of this cupboard would allow use for wine storage and serving.
