Molded and incised skirt. Materials: Walnut and burl walnut. Pine secondary. Stamped bras drawer pulls. Dimensions: Height: 87". Width: 42". Depth: 22-1/2". Locality and Period: Large factories throughout the East and Midwest. c. 1880. Comments: Reflective of the Victorian craving for multipurpose furnishings, the cylinder secretary bookcase combined the fuctionality of desk and bookcase. Cupboard doors conceal interior with 14 pigeonholes, 6 vertical slots flanking 2 stacked small drawers over galleried central compartment. Lower section having hinged and slightly slanted lift-top writing surface that raises to reveal large well. Front, back and side panels mortised and pegged to square stiles that form upper legs. Legs turned and tapered ending in ring and vase feet. Materials: Black walnut. Pine secondary. Dimensions: Height: 64". Width: 31". Depth: 31-1/2". Writing surface slightly overhanging, divides well from lower single pedestal base. Pedestal has one shallow divided drawer, one file size drawer with adjustable file support and a pull-out writing slide. Wide drawer above kneehole. Six brass capped feet. Sides and back paneled.
