Description: Tall 2 piece walnut and burl secretary bookcase. Upper section having overhanging molded and carved cornice above a pair of single paned glass doors. Half columns flank doors. Lower section having a burl-paneled cylinder front opening to a fitted interior with pull-out writing surface Below cylinder are 3 central short drawers flanked by 2 cupboard doors above one full width drawer. Molded and incised skirt.
Materials: Walnut and burl walnut. Pine secondary. Stamped bras drawer pulls.
Dimensions: Height: 87". Width: 42". Depth: 22-1/2".
Locality and Period: Large factories throughout the East and Midwest. c. 1880.
Comments: Reflective of the Victorian craving for multipurpose furnishings, the cylinder secretary bookcase combined the fuctionality of desk and bookcase. Eventually the cylnder front desk was replaced by the rolltop.

Description: 2 piece desk with tall upper section with plain slightly overhanging top over 2 half width drawers. Cupboard doors conceal interior with 14 pigeonholes, 6 vertical slots flanking 2 stacked small drawers over galleried central compartment. Lower section having hinged and slightly slanted lift-top writing surface that raises to reveal large well. Front, back and side panels mortised and pegged to square stiles that form upper legs. Legs turned and tapered ending in ring and vase feet.
Materials: Black walnut. Pine secondary.
Dimensions: Height: 64". Width: 31". Depth: 31-1/2".
Locality and Period: Throughout the South and Midwest. c.1840-50.
Comments: The design of this desk is a particularly well concieved configuration of pigeonholes, vertical storage and drawers making it wholly functional.

Description: Rectangular top having rounded corners and molded overhanging edges. Inset cloth writing surface with leather banding. Two drawers below top, upper drawer full length with incised design, lower drawer recessed and concealed having slanted front with shaped pull. Shaped brackets connecting rails and legs. Legs turned in columnar shape with rings on upper section terminating in squares that join bracket that form feet. Twin rails form stretcher connecting feet brackets.
Materials: Walnut. Pine secondary. Brass casters. Baize writing surface.

Description: 2-piece desk with quarter-round cover of turned louvers on canvas backing that rolls up and back to reveal well with 4 pigeonholes, 4 drawers and one locking compartment. Writing surface slightly overhanging, divides well from lower single pedestal base. Pedestal has one shallow divided drawer, one file size drawer with adjustable file support and a pull-out writing slide. Wide drawer above kneehole. Six brass capped feet. Sides and back paneled. Nailed,glued and screwed construction.  
Materials: Mahogany. Mixed secondary woods. Pulls: oblong wooded finger grips. Brass foot caps.
Dimensions: Height: 43". Width: 42". Depth: 34".
Locality and Period: Labeled "Standard Furniture Co." Herkimer, NY. c.1920-40.
Comments: Standard Furniture Company was in business for many years, having been founded in 1886 by Michael Foley, William Horrocks and Frank F. Lathrop. It was once the largest manufacturer of office desks and wooden furniture in the United States. Herkimer was known as the "desk capital of the world."
