Scottish Mahogany High Chest

Description: Striking tall Victorian mahogany Scottish chest of drawers having 2 slightly overhanging drawers with unusual shaped double frieze fronts. The lower section has 4 graduating lined drawers with original turned mother of pearl inlaid handles. The chest of drawers has beautiful turned column supports and stands on four chunky turned bun feet. The front is strikingly figured flamed mahogany and the piece is a rich medium mahogany colour with a striking grain, good patina. Fine hand dovetail construction. 
Materials: Mahogany solids and veneers. Pine secondary.

Locality and Period: Scotland. c. 1860.

Description: Period American Classical/Empire wig chest.  Beautifully matched figured mahogany solids and veneers. This fine chest consists of two long "wig" cabinets above single glove drawers with a central ogee mirror and cornice crown.  The bottom cabinet has four graduated drawers having turned knobs with fine hand dovetailing. The base has delicate scallop molded ogee feet. Original finish lightly cleaned and waxed. 
Materials: Mahogany veneers and solids. Pine secondary.

Locality and Period: Larger East coast cabinet making centers. c. 1840.

Comments: Diminutive 5 drawer chest & mirror, perfect for a youth or guest room. Furniture with the Northern Furniture Company brand name was manufactured in Sheboygan between the years 1904 and 1949. The company was originally founded by George B. Mattoon in 1881.

Description: Large chest with dome-shaped lift top. Left front and right rear panels with screened crescent moon cut-outs for ventilation. 3 Iron straps wrap the trunk to serve as structure, hinges and latches. Forged lift handles on sides. Hammered angled metal to protect corners attached with rose head nails. 2 large iron locks on front panel.   
Materials: Wood. Iron hinges, straps and locks.
Dimensions: Height: 34-1/2". Width: 55". Depth: 23".
Locality and Period: Probably European. c. 1815.
Comments: Used by immigrant's coming to the United States in the late 18th and early 19th centuries this massive trunk would hold the entire possesions of the traveling family. This example has the unique feature of crescent moon cutouts, one in the front and one in back, to provide ventilation during long ocean voyages.

Comments: Johanna Maria Lind (October 6, 1820 – November 2, 1887), better known as Jenny Lind, was a Swedish opera singer , often known as the "Swedish Nightingale". One of the most highly regarded singers of the 19th century, she is known for her performances in soprano roles in Sweden and across Europe, and for an extraordinarily popular concert tour of America beginning in 1850. Many places and objects have been named for Lind, during her visit to America.

Locality and Period: New England west to Missouri, south to the Carolinas. c. 1830.
Comments: 6-board chests were designed to store clothing, blankets and other bulky items. They were favored by rural carpenters because they were easier to make than taller chest-over-drawers.

Description: Low chest with overhanging, molded, locking lift top. Well with small lift top till. Base molding matches molding on top. Turned bun feet doweled and nailed on. Grain painted with 6-board dovetail construction.
Materials: Yellow pine, walnut. Painted in yellow and ochre to imitate expensive woods.
Dimensions: Height: 25". Width: 44". Depth: 21.
Locality and Period: Unknown origin, signed "R. Hershy, Phoenix Arizona" on back. c. 1840-50. 
Comments: A variation of the common 6-board chest, turned-foot chests replaced earlier bracket-foot dower chest that were popular in Pennsylvania.
