Scottish Mahogany High Chest Item #: AF0971 Description: Striking tall Victorian mahogany Scottish chest of drawers having 2 slightly overhanging drawers with unusual shaped double frieze fronts. The lower section has 4 graduating lined drawers with original turned mother of pearl inlaid handles. The chest of drawers has beautiful turned column supports and stands on four chunky turned bun feet. The front is strikingly figured flamed mahogany and the piece is a rich medium mahogany colour with a striking grain, good patina. Fine hand dovetail construction. Left front and right rear panels with screened crescent moon cut-outs for ventilation. 3 Iron straps wrap the trunk to serve as structure, hinges and latches. Forged lift handles on sides. Hammered angled metal to protect corners attached with rose head nails. 2 large iron locks on front panel. Materials: Wood. Iron hinges, straps and locks. Dimensions: Height: 34-1/2". Width: 55". Comments: Used by immigrant's coming to the United States in the late 18th and early 19th centuries this massive trunk would hold the entire possesions of the traveling family.
