Victorian American Walnut Knock-down Wardrobe

Description: Large storage piece with overhanging, molded and scalloped cornice. 2-door cupboard with scroll carved decorated paneled doors and plain center divider. Interior has 2 unique swing-out arms with clothing hooks. Lower section having two half width drawers and scroll base forming feet. Paneled sides and back. Knock-down construction.
Materials: Walnut. Pine secondary.
Dimensions: Height: 95-1/2". Width: 65" (crown), 58" (body). Depth: 24-1/2" (crown), 22" (body).
Locality and Period: Midwest, possibly Missouri. c.1860.
Comments: Closets were rare in most houses and apartments until the late 19th century making large wardrobes like this a necessity. The knock-down construction of this piece makes for simple transportation and setup. The removable interior features lends this wardrobe to many practical modern uses.

American Empire Mahogany Sideboard

Description: Large 2-piece sideboard with molded, slightly overhanging top. Top with rounded corners and rounded segments conforming to recessed lower central portion. Upper section: 2 bowfront drawers with concealed finger-grip pulls flanking a central dropfront storage compartment seperated by upper columns. Lower section: 2 bowfront cupboard doors on each side of a large, recessed central paneled and chamfered cupboard seperated by 4 turned and carved columns. Molded bowfront base with 4 front elaborately carved paw feet that are continuations of columns. Massive turned vase rear feet.
Materials: Mahogany solids and veneers. Pine secondary.
Dimensions: Height: 43". Width: 74". Depth: 23".
Locality and Period: Large East coast furniture centers. c. 1830.
Comments: Classical or Empire sideboards are considerably less ornate than those of the Federal era. Sideboards of this sort are noted for their fine graining and detailed carvings. These pieces go well with modern furnishings and are useful for storage.

Description: 1-piece cupboard with plain, slightly overhanging top and a shaped splashboard. One full length hand dovetailed drawer over two paneled doors, all having turned wooded knobs. Sides having two pinwheel and fan decorated punched tin panels. Front feet of a unique and appealing form with rear legs extension of side panels.
Materials: Walnut, tiger maple. Pine secondary. Punched tin side panels.
Dimensions: Height: 52". Width: 40-1/2". Depth: 17-1/2".
Locality and Period: Midwest. c.1850-60.
Comments: Used to store foodstuffs and cool freshly baked pies, these cupboards were originally found in the kitchen or dining area. This example is a very rare combination of contrasting walnut and figured maple.

Description: Sideboard with slightly overhanging, molded top that conforms to the shape of the center section. Center having two drawers, the top with silverware dividers and felt. Serpentine cupboard doors flank drawers, the right side having one interior shelf, the left without shelf for tall bottle storage. Fluted stiles continue to 6 tapered and turned legs. Front 4 legs also carved and reeded terminating in ring and vase feet. Scrolled skirt.
Materials: Figured walnut veneers and walnut solids. Various secondary woods. Brass hardware.
